According to a recent survey by PC World Business (PCWB) nearly half of all SMEs in Britain are lacking any form of software licensing policy and most are unaware of the legal obligations of having software licenses.

Philip Keown (BA, ACA, CISA)
Chairman of the Board of The Federation

Philip has specialised in Information and Technology assurance, IT governance, control and security for over 20 years, and his main focus is to help organisations to manage and control their use of systems and information technology, and to get the best value from it. A Chartered Accountant and CISA qualified, Philip is a partner at Grant Thornton, where he heads the firm's Technology Risk Management practice.

Philip is an affiliate member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, and Chairman of the IDEA UK User Group. He has been a member of the FAST board since 1997, chairing the Finance Committee, and in 2006 was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Federation.

John Lovelock
Chief Executive of The Federation

John Lovelock joined the Federation Against Software Theft (The Federation) in 2002 bringing extensive overall business management experience gained as a former General Manager of Ora Electronics UK Ltd who became the largest mobile phone accessory supplier in the UK within the 4 years he was there and then Managing Director of Allgon (UK) Limited, Sweden’s largest mobile phone antenna manufacturer.

Prior to this he spent 19years in South Africa where he originally went to play rugby for a ‘couple’ of years, with the intention of returning to the UK to play for England. Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, he grew-up into business and general management roles within the South African motor manufacturing industry.

As Chief Executive of The Federation John’s focus is to represent the software industry of the United Kingdom to Government when lobbying for legislative reform; Instigating copyright enforcement action through the Legal Team; working with industry and Government agencies in the education sectors to ensure that UK students grow up to respect Intellectual property in all its forms.

John is Chairman of the Digital Group within the Alliance Against Intellectual Property Theft, which focuses on theft and misuse of members digital content such as software, music, film, games, eBooks and digital publications by end users. Their current campaign engaging with employer bodies such as the Confederation of British Industries (CBI), Institute of Directors (IoD) and the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to point out the risk to business of them not having control over employees in the workplace.

Stuart Anthony (BA, ACA)
Chairman of The Federation's Finance Committee

Stuart is a board director of The Federation (The Federation Against Software Theft) and Director of Finance EMEA for Macrovision Corporation (NASDAQ: MVSN). Macrovision markets copy protection and rights management technologies and products to prevent the illicit duplication, reception and use of video, audio programs and computer software (www.macrovision.com).

He was formerly Chief Finance Officer at Monactive Limited, the leading Software Asset Management decision tool provider (www.monactive.com).

Stuart was Group Finance Director of GX Networks Limited (formerly XO Communications Europe), a Company whose audited turnover was £29 million for the 12 months ending 31 December 2000, and UK Finance Director of Concentric Network Europe. These were B2B and residential dial-up Internet Service Providers providing online services for 100,000's of customers 24/7. Stuart has several years experience in the ISP/Telco arena.

Stuart graduated with 2.1(Hons) degree in Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology from University College London. Stuart is a Chartered Accountant and qualified with PriceWaterhouseCoopers London.

Conor Ward
Chairman of FLAG (FAST Legal Advisory Group)

Conor Ward is a partner in Lovells’ technology, media and telecommunications group specialising in contentious and non-contentious aspects of computers and communications law. On graduating in 1984, he joined IBM United Kingdom Laboratories where he worked for four years as a development programmer.

On leaving IBM in 1988, he joined the commercial department of a London based firm of solicitors where he specialised in intellectual property and information technology matters. Since joining Lovell White Durrant in early 1990, he has been involved in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious work relating to the information technology industry.

Conor is a member of the British Computer Society’s Legal Affairs Committee and Computer Law Association. He is a member of the editorial board of Sweet & Maxwell’s “Computer & Telecommunications Law Review”.

Conor is recognised as a leading practitioner in the field of IT law in the Legal 500, Chambers (in both the UK and The World’s Leading Lawyers guides) and in Legal Business Legal Expert’s guide.

Andy Burton

Andy joined The Federation as a Board Director in 2006 to bring his wealth of commercial experience to the team. As Chief Executive of Centennial Software Limited, Andy heads up the market leader in provision of IT asset discovery and IT governance solutions that many FAST members already rely upon to manage their IT infrastructure from a cost, compliance and risk perspective. Centennial recently acquired Monactive Limited, another strong player in the field of Software Asset Management, consolidating Centennial’s position as a solution vendor for this important business discipline.

Andy joined Centennial in 2004 after four years as Chief Operating Officer with leading content management vendor, Clearswift, where he had worldwide responsibility for sales, marketing and support. His career in IT software and services has been a long one with previous roles as the Chief Executive of the Content Management division of Baltimore Technologies and Chief Executive of Chubb Information Security. Prior to his move into IT Andy was managing Director of several electronic security companies within the Chubb Security Group (now UTC) and Securicor Group (now G4S).

With over 20 years in helping businesses protect their commercial assets (from physical to electronic) Andy is ideally placed to advise the Board on a broad range of commercial matters. Andy holds an MBA and is also a Board Director of a not-for-profit Society (Cotswold Water Park Society) aimed at improving a large area of the countryside for people, wildlife and the environment.

Dr Douglas Eyeions MBE

Douglas Eyeions was Chairman of The Federation from 1996 until he stepped down in 2007. Previously he had held the position of Director General of the Computing Services & Software Association (now Intellect) for over 16 years until the end of 1995.

His university research work for his doctorate on cosmic radiation involved one of the earliest applications of the Mark1* computer in 1953 and he subsequently worked with early computers at Rolls Royce and GEC. In 1965 he set up a new company - Computer Projects Ltd.- and remained its Managing Director for the next twelve years under the changing ownership of Associated Newspapers, Citicorp and BOC

He has served on many national and international bodies concerned with information technology, such as the National Electronics Council, the British Advisory Bureau on Telecommunications and the Confederation of European Computer User Associations. The many voluntary offices he has held in the past include Director General of the European Computing Services Association, Treasurer of the British Computer Society, Vice-Chairman of the Computing Services Industry Training Council, Chairman of the National Economic Development Organization’s IT Component Quality Working party, Treasurer of the European Institute of Quantum Computing and Chairman of the IBM Computer Users' Association

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Physicist. In 1989 he was awarded an MBE for his services to the UK computing industry.

Richard Hales

Richards work with The Federation compliments more than 20 years software industry experience, primarily in sale and marketing roles. Richard is currently responsible for the UK & Ireland business of F-Secure, a leading security software vendor (www.f-secure.co.uk).

Prior to F-Secure, Richard held roles including General Manager of the £135m Software division at Computer 2000 Distribution and as business development manager for Autodesk, a manufacturer of the market leading "AutoCAD" and related product range. In this role, exposure to international markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa gave an excellent opportunity to experience the approaches and issues in different cultures over seven years.

Whilst employed by two resellers, Richard gained first hand experience in the sales, development and implementation of "organisation critical" design solutions, in many cases providing customers with applications that delivered significant competitive advantage in their respective markets.

Having graduated with a BSc from the Open University and subsequently completed a MBA degree also with the Open University, Richard moved from Manchester and now lives with his family in Surrey.

Dawn Osborne

Educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, Dawn Osborne joined Rouse Legal (formerly Willoughby & Partners) in November 1996 having trained and qualified with the media and intellectual property practice of Denton Hall. She became a partner of Rouse Legal and an executive of Rouse & Co International in January 2000. Altogether Dawn has fifteen years experience exclusively in intellectual property including trade marks, copyright, database rights, confidentiality/privacy and designs.

Dawn handles general intellectual property work for film, publishing and software companies and entertainment clients and a large number of luxury goods and big brand companies.

Dawn specialises in Internet law/e-commerce. She regularly advises businesses in relation to the content or hosting of web sites, the use of brands/IPR on the Net and the protection and enforcement of IPR in cyberspace. She is regularly involved in the recovery of domain names for clients and has been involved in a number of successful applications to the Court and many domain name dispute resolution proceedings in this regard. She is an arbitrator for the WIPO ICANN, the .eu and the Nominet domain name dispute resolution processes.

Dawn also has a particular interest in ADR, as well as being a panellist for the WIPO, .eu and Nominet domain name dispute resolution procedures mentioned above, she is also a panellist for the Musicians Union on line dispute resolution scheme, an INTA neutral, an accredited mediator for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators and Dawn routinely represents clients in mediation proceedings.

Claudia Pavoletti

Claudia Pavoletti is EMEA Manager Compliance and Legal Affairs for McAfee and joined the Federation Board of Directors in 2003.

Claudia joined McAfee in 2002, to start up the compliance and anti-piracy program in Europe, Middle East and Africa. She currently manages McAfee’s intellectual property rights, by ensuring adequate protection to security products and to implement the company’s policies related to licence compliance and brand protection.

Claudia’s previous job was with the BSA (Business Software Alliance) for 4 and a half years. During her time at the BSA Claudia started up and took responsibility for the Italian program as an Anti-piracy manager and then Country manager. Claudia worked closely with government authorities and with public affairs to ensure adequate protections for intellectual property rights. She was responsible of events, marketing campaigns and training programs for enforcement agents and a frequent spokeswoman on issues relating to software protection.

Claudia started her in-house career in EMI Music in Milan, one of the major movers in the record industry. She was in the Legal & Business Affairs Department, dealing with international and local copyright contracts and then in the Strategic Marketing Department, to take responsibility for international co-marketing, special projects and neighboring rights.

Claudia is a specialist in intellectual property rights, having worked in the IPR arena for 15 years. She holds a Doctorate in law from the Law Faculty of the University in Pisa, where she was a lecturer on copyright in 1994. She specialized in International Copyright Legislation and Intellectual Property Rights; and has also specialized in marketing and communication and gained a Master in Communication at Polimi (Politecnico of Milan). Claudia is a lecturer in copyright and IPR and a member of the jury of the eContent Award.
