Of the 600 UK organisations surveyed:
- An overwhelming majority are failing to address all areas of SAM
- Most are continuing to expose themselves to the higher costs associated with over-purchasing and also liability for licence overuse
- A majority are merely dabbling in SAM and not exploiting their ROI and realising true benefits
- Only those that identify themselves as more mature with regards to SAM are recognising ROI and making cost savings of up to 20%

The SIRB annual survey of the UK commercial and public sector organisations is designed to understand changing attitudes, practices and perception of the issues surrounding effective software asset management. WORKSHOP 3: Achieving ISO SAM in stages
ISO SAM for processes (“dash 1”) has been around for over three years. While considered good for its comprehensiveness, it has been viewed as too ambitious by some organisations. It is therefore now being revised to allow attainment in tiers, with no requirement to proceed further than an organisation wishes. The first tier is for ‘trustworthy data’, also sometimes called ‘repeatable licence compliance processes’. This session will give an overview of the proposed update, including what is covered in each tier. The session will also briefly cover other ISO SAM developments, including “dash 2” for software identification which has recently been published.
